Back in January our server crashed and we lost a couple months of data that we were unable to restore to this site. The following information was posted after the Dec-Jan test window and might be useful for those who will be testing soon.

privacy
grievance procedures
alternative work schedules

learning theories
OD
competencies
leadership
ethics
organizational strategy

There were certainly more topics, but I can't remember them all. However, I used the HRCP Program to study for the exam and nearly everything I was tested on was covered in the materials.

I just took the exam this morning and passed. Some of the topics I remember include:
organizational development
employee involvement
quid pro quo
hostile work environment
training (A LOT of ?s about this topic)
ULP by employers
ULP by unions
NLRA
Griggs v Duke Power Co
FMLA
defined benefit
defined contribution
flexible spending accounts
HIPAA
compensable time
OSHA
recruiting methods
CRA Title VII
CRA 1991
WARN Act
adverse impact
One of the things I didn't really like was that so many of the questions would say "what is the MOST appropriate action" or "what is LEAST likely to happen". There were also a lot of "what should you do FIRST" questions. So, basically, in all of the questions phrased this way, more than one answer seemed correct. Overall, though, it's not too terribly hard if you've sincerely studied a lot.
Another piece of advice-- take the HRCI practice tests. They are totally worth the $70-- the exam questions were more similar to these practice questions than any other practice questions I've come across. Also, I highly recommend the SHRM Learning System. I used that & the Anne Bogardus book. Good luck!!!

Hi Guys!

Quick Question: Under the Workforce Planning Section - Does anyone remember being asked about the Retention Requirements? Example: Federal Insurance Contribution Act - Retain Records - 4 years from the date tax is due or tax is paid.Rehabilitation Act of 1973 - 2 years.
Thanks so much in advance for you help!!!

I don't recall having a question regarding retention requirements. Though I think there might have been one on the assessment exam dealing with I-9 forms. Of course, that doesn't mean you won't have one on your exam. Good luck on your exam!

My Impressions of the Test:
*This is not a test of memorization. A majority of the questions require you to take the information and apply it. There are of course questions that ask you for specifics
*I went through and answer the ones I know right off the bat and marked the ones that I could not immediate give an answer for. It may be intimidating when you get to the end of the test and see the # of marked ones (I had well over 80+ and was about ready to cry); but you have four hours at your disposal to look over the questions you marked in more detail.
*I can not stress the importance of using your four hours to your advantage. I went through each question and look at the answers and made sure I felt it was the right answer. I actually caught a few mistakes on the ones I thought were right through my first run at the test.
*I also recommend actually using the eraser board and pens that the test center gives you. It gives you an ability to jot down information when you stuck on a question about the subject of the question and can help you determine which answers is the correct one.
Materials That I Used:
Learning System –About 95% of what was on the test was in there if you are able to purchase it / I actually used the 2006 LS that a friend had to study with
HRCP Flashcards – They are good supplemental tool / while the wording is different, it does help fill in info that the LS did not cover
Certgear – I highly recommend this program / their questions help with the train of thought that you can expect to use during the PHR
HRCI assessment test – Good Indicator of PHR
HRCP 100 Question Test – Another Good Indictor of PHR / however, the terminology is difficult

I took the PHR test last Thursday and passed. My test had a lot of FLSA questions. My advise to upcoming test takers know your FLSA re: exempt employees and interment leave FMLA. I had two calculations one on turnover and the other on a non-exempt employee who was on-call. If anyone would like to email for specifics, I can be reached at
mmlw@earthlink.net.
Good Luck to all who are taking the exam.
