I passed the PHR!!!

The online study group was so helpful. Thanks to all who contributed !!! and a special thanks to Sadie for helping us out in and out when we used to get stuck in a problem and motivating me to keep up the hard work.

I won't say my exam was easy... it was difficult. I didn't get any numericals, or cases; there was 80% application based questions and that is the reason I finished my exam with only 4 minutes left on the clock. I answered every question as I moved through the exam, but I marked several for review. When I reviewed a question I only changed the answer if I could come up with a good reason to change it and I changed about 30 answers out of the 40-45 marked.

I used the following material for my preparation:

- SHRM Learning System 2007
- Preparation book by Anne Bogardus
- Flash Cards - I prepared them color coded on my own and were helpful studying when traveling to and fro from work
- HRCI assessment exam
- HRCP practise test
- PHRprep practise tests
- This online group and the questions posted on the borad so far
- Reviewing test taking tips , blogs
- Reviewing the tests I practised and doing them again and again was helpful; 1040 questions on the SHRM CD were very helpful and somewhat like the main exam

Topics that I recall are:
- ADA, FMLA and Worker's compensation
- ADR, grievance procedure
- Organizational Climate
- Ethics
- Performance evaluation (many questions - direct and application based)
- Training (lots of question)
- Equity theory
- Union Decertification
- New hire reporting to govt. why? ( my work experience made me answer that)
- Independent contractor
- OSHA, Safety and Health (many questions)
- Training setup (circle, chevron, classroom, many questions on e-learning)
- Bloom's taxonomy
- Cognitive learning
- Experimental v. Scientific method
- Behavior Modeling
- ADDIE
- Strategic Implementation; evaluation; development
- Job enrichment, job enlargement
- FMLA (important)
- Union and employer ULP
- Wildcat strike
- Job posting (Is it required by EEOC as mandatory or is it a company policy)
- Organization Culture
- FLSA - Working hours for minors
- Exempt employees ( 3-4 questions)
- Union shop, agency shop
- Norris-la Guardia Act
- Blood borne pathogen Act
- There was one question on "prima facie" case; but it was not a direct question on case.

Thanks to everyone in the group...

Lina

Hi:

My name is Tonya Brown. I am located in Charleston, SC. I am presently a Operations/Staffing Manager with a company out of Sanford, NC. I will be taking the PHR exam in December 2008 and would like to join the study group. I have already taken a preparation class out in Green Bay, WI at a local community college; however, I decided to wait to take the exam. Presently I am using Ann Borgardus study book and the Mathias HR Text Book. I would appreciate it if someone could respond to me as soon as possible regarding my request. I would like to know when the next study group meeting will take place. I look forward to working with you all.

Thanks,

Tonya Brown

Hello - My name is Angela. I am scheduled to take the PHR on December 5th, 2008 in Oregon. I have 6+ years as an HR Manager, a BA in Industrial Organizational Psych and 3 years experience as a recruiter/ HR Specialist. I am using the Bogardus book + CD which includes practise tests and flashcards. I am consistently getting 80-100% on the assessment tests but they are becoming more wrote memorization than actual new comprehension. I need help on the Union information as I have never worked for a union shop or recieved much more than the basic laws in this area. I am available for an online study group after 5pm 1-2 x weekly through test time. I do not plan on taking any prep classes at local colleges and I am not a memeber of my local SHRM group.
